Associate Professor of English, University of Newcastle, specialising in creative writing. Winner of Flinders Memorial Fellowship in Poetry, Lincolnshire and Humberside Arts 1974-75. Commended 1986 Wesley Wright Prize for Poetry; 1986 National Poetry Competition; 1988 National Poetry Award; ABC Bicentennial Literary Award; 1990, Writer in Residence Anhui and Shanghai. Paul is the recipient of many grants and is represented in some 59 poetry and writing collections; a contributor to 8 Team Publications and Exhibitions; editor/contributor in 14 books/anthologies; 28 published articles and interviews.

Principal Conductor Novocastrian Arts Orchestra 1991-95.
Larger-scale compositions have been performed by The Australian Opera, the Western Australia Arts Orchestra, The Hunter Orchestra, The Sound Construction Company, the Amherst Saxophone Quartet (USA), Francine Bell and the Novocastrian Arts Orchestra, the 3rd Military District Band, and the Bennelong Wind & Brass Ensemble.
